CMAS, ISA Junior Certificate


To supply a framework for the training of children between the ages of 12 and 14 years of age enabling them to obtain the Junior Sport Diver qualification. Children over 14 should complete the CMAS-ISA One Star Diver course.To prepare a child mentally, physically and psychologically for diving without his/her parents. To provide the child with a leisure experience which can be enjoyed in a totally different environment. The objectives help the child to learn to control his/her body in a different environment by:

  • Adjusting balance and stability to conditions of near weightlessness
  • Using the feet as propulsion engines
  • Breathing from an artificial air source
  • Adapt to a four-dimensional environment, that has:
    - Length
    - Width
    - Depth
    - Time
  • Understand the new set of rules imposed by being underwater (a different environment with new dangers: to be concerned for others and trust in them).


  • Must be at least 12 years old
  • Must submit a medical certificate clearing the holder as fit to participate in the sport of underwater diving before participating in any practical training. A medical practitioner using the CMAS-ISA Sport Diving Medical Examination Form must have carried out the medical examination. The certificate must not be older than 3 months where an individual is attending a CMAS-ISA course for the first time, and not older than 12 months when the Junior Diver certificate is finally issued. For CMAS-ISA, the examination must be repeated every year between the ages of 12 and 14.
  • Must pass the theory evaluation as set by a panel of Instructors, or as set by CMAS-ISA. A pass mark of 65% is compulsory. This evaluation can be either orally or written. The evaluations must be kept for record purposes for a period of at least two years
  • Must pass the prescribed practical evaluations.
  • Must log at least 5 scuba dives in open water and have these verified by at least an in-date Two Star Instructor. The dives are to be of at least 15 minutes duration and to a depth not exceeding 18m. Only 1 dive is to be executed per day.


The above-mentioned prerequisites are the minimum required for the CMAS-ISA Junior Diver Certificate.
